No! No! Not a hard reset!

We have yet to encounter the problem that actually *requires* a hard reset.
Virtually everything can be fixed somehow.

In the Windows directory, there are starsi.cpl, startap.cpl, and themes.cpl.
These are the SysInfo, StarTap, and Themes Settings applets.

In the Windows directory, do you have a MenuPop.wav file? Is it 1014 bytes
in size and dated 6-23-99? If you double tap on it, does it play?

In Sounds & Reminders / Sounds, do you have MenuPop assigned to the Menu
Popup event? Does it play when you hit preview? If you OK out, is it active
when a menu pops up?

I don't get it about StarTap Setting Applet, where is it?
I can't *delete* the wav file. Maybe I should do a hard reset and install=
it
one by one like a new device.

That's happened to me as well.
Menu Pop, Menu Selection have no sound.
What happen? On the older version everything was OK.
By the way, can I delete the files (in Star Tap folder) that i don't use, like InPhrase, Task, or Regedit?

Thanks

Wow!

I can't confirm the InsPhrase problem, it seems to work fine around here.
There *is* something quite strange about StarTap on a Storage Card on a
Jornada, though. Worst of all, the Toolbar is appearing at the *top* of the
screen. Look for a new version that will correct these odd behaviors.
Thanks!

Well, I solved 2 of my problems simply by unchecking "Hibernate" on the StartUp group of the StarProps (Main screen/Control Panel/StarTap). Now the close button and Insert Phrase module work fine. I did it by overkill, unfortunately, using the Menu's Uninstall option. At least, it did the job. However, that one little icon (on every screen) still veers to the upper left. Suggestions?

#27: StarTap problems: ins. phrase, close button, icon placement
Posted by Ken (Email: on) on April 14, 2001 at 13:41:13 Back to Top
Hi, there! I'm finding a few kinks in StarTap 4.93.03 on my Jornada 545, installed on a CF card. First, the Insert Phrase component not only doesn't work (won't even open), but after attempting to use it or any of the links on the desktop Star icon (Star Tap, Next Task, Task Box, etc.), my device slows down to a snail's crawl, eventually needing a soft reset. Second, the icon placement is weird. I am using the small icons, placed in two vertical columns. On every page, there is one icon on the left column far above the next. The only way to make the columns line up is to set the spacing to 0,0 and place each manually. Arrange icons always puts an errant icon up in the far left with a sizeable space underneath separating it from the next. Finally, the close icon on the toolbar doesn't work. I am also running GigaBar 1.58. Some of the commands, such as Capture, work better when sent from the GigaBar than coming from the StarTap menu. Others, like the Ins. Phrase, won't work on either. Bugs, or am I screwing up? Thanks.

Well, that's a new one! You'll have to send me a screen capture of that
problem, by email. Both StarTap and GigaBar can do screen captures.

How can I return it to the bottom?

#23: RE: no sys sounds after uninstalling startap...?

But have you tried *erasing* one of the misbehaving sounds?

#22: RE: no sys sounds after uninstalling startap...?
Posted by PSMobile (Email: off) on April 07, 2001 at 17:06:48 Back to Top
the sounds tab shows all the events as having the correct sound file assigned to each of the events & it does allow me to preview the sound file (makes the sound).

but when it comes time for the system to play certain sounds (such as Menu Popup, Menu Selction) there is no sound.

some of the sounds that work are; the screen tap, network start/end. most of the others do not.

the *.wav files are in the windows direcoty & they work if i double click on them.

i'm at a loss here...HELP! :(

#21: RE: no sys sounds after uninstalling startap...?
Posted by Gene Knight (Email: off) on April 07, 2001 at 16:15:43 Back to Top
But it doesn't happen that way. The Sounds applet does all the registry
manipulation that's necessary.

If you set Asterisk to Asterisk and preview it, does it make a sound? If
not, what is the date/time on Asterisk.wav? Is Asterisk.wav in ROM? What
happens if you erase it?

#20: RE: no sys sounds after uninstalling startap...?
Posted by PSMobile (Email: on) on April 07, 2001 at 16:10:53 Back to Top
hehehe...that was one of the fist things that i tried, but no go.

i'm getting the feeling that it's more of a registry issue, the theme took over those events and never released them after uninstalling...

In Settings / Sounds & Reminders / Sounds, restore the assignments and you
should be OK.

i've lost most of the system sounds (menu clicks, etc) after uninstalling startap, i've tried reinstalling startap, assigning new sounds to the events, nothing seams to do it.

this all stems from when one of the startap themes replaced the default sounds with new ones that were removed during the uninstallation routine...any ideas?

thanks :(

1. I try to drag a box around icons to select a set of them to move into another folder, but that pesky pop up menu foils my efforts.

2. in explorer, where you can select to have a tree on the top/bottom/left/right, what about an option to hide the tree altogether? that way it would be just like Windows!

3. Now that we have import from start menu, what about the other direction, ie export to start menu???!!! I imported my icons and then arranged them so nicely into sub folders, but my start menu is the same old start menu and it's so difficult to change the short cuts on that.

4. have you ever considered making the icons at the top of startap skinnable too, like gigabar?

5. I read someone said something about screensavers and I think that's a cool idea. I have some "screen savers" that draw patterns on the screen but they're just programs that I have to launch. couldn't startap launch them after it detects a certain amount of inactivity (no screen taps)?

this is related to giga but i'm too lazy to go over there and start a new msg, so:

1. I notice that it flickers momentarily on the screen during full screen programs, about once every 5 or 6 seconds. these include most jimmy.com games. is there any way for giga to stop painting itself on the screen when it detects that a full screen game is running?

Chances are that the StarTap.btn file is corrupted. Rename the file to
*something* else, and try starting StarTap again. V4.93.01 seems to run fine
on a Jornada here.

I Just upgraded to the latest version on a Jornada 548
and all I get when I double click on the StarTap.exe
file is a 3D wipe out as if it were going
to start, then I get back to where I `was.

What happened???

By the way this happened AFTER I associated
htm files to IE

I guess my only recourse is to reload v 4.93 or lower if
I can find it.

IMPORT
i select file|grab shorts, choose
everything, preserve folders ticked. my
pspc (cassiopeia wince2.11) pauses for a
several seconds then i get a (oh darn!)
where's daddy message. all the icons i had
on my screen before are gone, and instead
i have the following there (this happens
every time, i tried it 5 times, restoring
my buttons before each attempt. also note
that if i don't tick preserve folders the
import works ok no problems): from left to
right...
1. a folder icon with no caption,
containing nothing but a parent link.
2. a caption called CalliGrapher Help with
no icon. i tap it and nothing happens.
3. a folder called Start Menu, which
contains Parent, Programs and Settings.
3.1. Programs contains Parent and
CalliGrapher folder
3.1.1. Calligrapher folder
contains Parent, Letter
Shape Selector, and
CalliGrapher (these icons
work ok).
3.2. Settings folder contains Parent
and World clock, which works ok.

in my start menu, CalliGrapher is first program group. it contains GalliGrapher Help.lnk (shortcut to htm file), CalliGrapher.lnk and Letter Shape Selector.lnk. My next group is Communication (ce built-in communications folder) any more info reqd let me know

Ok here's the details.

ICONS
i have the woody ce theme on, which
changes the colors to brown colors.
before, the icons on the startap popup
task box had a browny color background
(like where grey is with the standard
theme), but now they have a white
background, like the icons no longer have
transparency around them. i notice the
same thing with the task box window

Obviously we're interested in feedback on a new feature. Although it works
fine around here, users' machines are invariably more complex. With Buttons
/ Backup and Restore, there's no permanent risk to your existing shortcuts.
If someone has a setup that can reliably produce an error, we'd love to talk
to you! Drop me a line by email.

my import didn't work so good you buggers. Where's Daddy?

can the import run automatically every day, and prompt if new items appear since the last run?

here's an idea for a new product... it's called ThumbTack and you use it on your CE device when you're upset with star tap. unfortunately your ce device does not work again after the use (due to the cracked screen and oozing lcd fluid) so it is a once-only affair. what do you think?

I haven't tried it yet (the download is
happening as I type), however if it is
everything the release notes say it is,
then this is what I have been waiting for
since 1999. Not having a feature like this
has been what has hobbled Star Tap for
years and is why I have been using another
(unmentioned) software co's launcher
since buying my CE device.

Fingers crossed that it works out right!

#2: RE: fonts bug
Posted by Gene Knight (Email: off) on April 04, 2001 at 03:02:35 Back to Top
This is not a GigaBar issue, but really a CE issue. There are some fonts
(Comic Sans is the most common) that the system will use in preference to
its own built-in Tahoma. I'm not aware of any work-around except to remove
the offending font.

There probably will be a GigaBar font option in StarTap's Themes (good
idea!), but it probably wouldn't help in a case like this.

#1: fonts bug
Posted by z (Email: off) on April 04, 2001 at 01:02:39 Back to Top
sorry I think I'm in the wrong board because this relates primarily to gigabar. when I have put fonts in the fonts folder, gigabar seems to arbitrarily choose fonts from there to display the app titles and the clock. it seems to take whatever is there, eg times roman font, and will even take a bold+italic font if there's nothing else (making it very difficult to read due to low point size). in fixing this, what about setting an option for the font gb uses in the themes cpl?
