Marc,

Bit of a hack, but this works for me - I use an 11 point font!

Edit your registry:
HKEY_current_user/Software/Thumb Up!/Starbuck
The rireg key holds your reg info along with your settings. The first pair is the font size!

Note: once you change this, if you go into the font selection menu, it will not hold the change. So set your font and stick to it to avoid editing the registry every time.

Tried it. Now in worse shape with Internet Explorer
coming up when not wanted.

I am left with one conclusive alternative - a complete wipe and installing a
backup system image before StarTap was installed.

Darn! Have you tried a soft reset before the install? That's *always* a
good idea.

Gene

I downloaded the program.

On install, a message comes up

The file "\windows\starnls.dll" is in use or is in ROM.
If the file is not in ROM,please close the application
using the file.

I don't think I had any other programs running. On pressing no,
the program installs BUT I get that expiry notice again.

This message also came up when I tried to uninstall StarTap.

Help.

Thanks,

Gary

Hm. You must have a proxy server that is sending you old copies of
StarTap. That was updated at the end of last month. You should be able
to download from this address:

http://www.thumbsupsoft.com/downloads/20010709/StarTap.exe

Gene

Thank you for the quick response.

But...I can't do that unless Startap is installed and has not expired.
Since it has expired (and is non-functional)and I am unable to find
another free (and newer) version, what can I do?

Thank you

Gary

The best way to uninstall is to use the File / UnInstall option from
StarTap's menu. *Then* use Remove Programs on the device, and you should
be all set.

Mr. Knight

I am having ongoing challenges with removing all traces of StarTap from my Jornada 548.
A clean uninstall was not possible through the remove programs facility and I had to resort to using File Explorer.
However, messages still come up about downloading a newer (and free progam; I am unable to locate a newer version yet) and there are still some files scattered
around in memory.

What is the best way to remove StarTap? If I reinstall, I noted that the StarTap boxes on ActiveSync were greyed out.

Your guidance would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Alas, the last "mini version" of GigaBar took care of some HP-specific
problems, and created Starbuck problems at the same time. We'll try
again!

Cool. Actually, while I am thinking about it, is there any way to make full-screen mode work with Gigabar? I tried the "hide gigabar" function in gigabar, but then the regular title bar comes back on. I would really like to be able to use this in full-screen mode with gigabar running (I like the total lack of any menus, etc. in the full-screen mode). I really like this reader, otherwise. Thanks.

Is there any chance that you could increase the choices for font sizes in Startbuck? I realize it seems odd on a screen the size of a PDA, but I could really use some larger font sizes. Thanks.

There are several links to download StarTap from the main page. Look in
the copy on the right of the page for the word "Download".

#20: RE: Star ImageVu problem
Posted by Gene Knight (Email: off) on June 21, 2001 at 03:25:29 Back to Top
The problem seems to be related to WisBar. ImageVu hides the *current*
taskbar. WisBar seems to take this as a cue to *show* the regular
taskbar, which you're seeing.

ImageVu's ignorance of that OK button has been fixed. The regular
StarTap download should show the fixed version after the 1st of the
month.

on the current version of StarTap+ when viewing Images in the Star ImageVu the view does not go into full screen like it used to and there does not seem to be any of the controls for closing the view any more. Also the most agravating is that it takes over my WIS bar and there is no easy way to shut it down. I get the defalt blue start bar and the OK button does nothing. HELP

#18: Re: Integration with Today Screen
Posted by Jaybot (Email: on) on June 09, 2001 at 14:25:12 Back to Top
That would be interesting, but it would still make Startap a seperate app running in the background on my gigabar or WIS bar; as opposed to being the application that is always running, takes over my today screen, and is the default page that pops up when i hit the today screen (or desktop/minimize) button.

As for beta testing, if you need any more beta testers, please feel free to email me, as I'd love to help out. Thanks!

Well, the next version of StarTap (StarLyt, currently in beta) can *host*
Today PlugIns like DashBoard. Does that help?

#16: Integration with Today Screen
Posted by Jaybot (Email: on) on June 08, 2001 at 23:22:45 Back to Top
This product has improved an incredible amonut from it's first release, and now that all of the functions are seperate apps, it runs very quickly; and I can even place hte icons wherever I want (without having to make invisible icons like I used too :)).

The only thing that needs to be done now, to make me a happy man, is to have Startap take over or 'skin' the Todays screen as a today screen app; in the style that Snoopsofts' Dashboard does.

I'm sure this can't take to long to get accomplished, and if you do, I'll be in PPC heaven. :)

Thanks!

Posted by Thom Dodge (Email: off) on June 05, 2001 at 09:32:08 Back to Top
I just discovered this little gem while playing. Unfortunately, however, on my IPAQ, the buttons on the Insert app disappear behind the gigabar on top. Even when the window is active, I am missing the buttons. Is there a fix for this?

Thanks!

In Settings / System / GigaBar Properties, in the Icon box, tap-hold on the
StarTap item, and select Disable. That'll take it out of GigaBar.
StarTap.btn, and anything else that remains in the StarTap directory can be
safely deleted.

#7: Star Tap uninstall issue
Posted by Erle (Email: on) on May 10, 2001 at 19:43:53 Back to Top
I installed Star Tap on my HP Jornada 548 (along with Gigabar) - then uninstalled Star Tap. Now I frequently get a yellow "?" icon near the date/time. When I tap/hold the icon I get a menu (Files, tasks, etc) and one with a Startap reference. Seleting any of the options in this menu does nothing - I assume it is "debris" left from the Star Tap program that did not get deleted? Also, there is are folders under Program Files\Star Tap\
entitled: Icons and Tmp (both empty). Also one file in the Star Tap folder entitled: Star Tap.btn

Please advise if I can "delete" these folders safely and how to resolve the issue.

Thanks for the help!

StarTap will run on anything that runs CE, which includes the HPs, but not
the Psion.

Most of the others are specific to the Pocket, or Palm PC.

Hi,
Will your program work with Psion 5C or with the HP-360 or HP 680.

Lots of good stuff about the software except information on precisely what equipment is wholly compatible or recommended.
Thanks

Sorry! Drag the old Control Panel into Recycle, and use File / Buttons /
Create / Control Panel to make a new one. In there, you'll find StarTap and
the new Themes applet.

Any Thoughts??

#2: StarTap 4.93
Posted by Ken (Email: off) on April 23, 2001 at 11:07:20 Back to Top
I have tremendous respect for the staff at ThumbsUpSoft, their products and their incredible support. With that said, I must say that I was terribly disappointed in StarTap 4.93. I think it still needs a lot of work, at least when installed on a Jornada 545. There were so many things going wrong, I decided to reinstall 4.28. Some of the more irritating problems were: inability to hibernate (hibernating was possible but caused components like Insert Phrase to fail, the device to slow down to a crawl, necessitating a warm reset, and the close button to stop working); strange placement of icons when "arranged;" failure of alarm systems to sound; created an inability of the PPC to find other programs' system files (especially Startler.exe); and after executing a program from StarTap, instead of returning to the StarTap screen, the program opened the Desktop (Today) screen. The one bug that's been reported that I didn't experience was flipping the command bar to the opposite end of the screen. If you own a Jornada 540 series, you might find it wise to stay with your current version until they've fixed all the bugs. Conversely, the new GigaBar(1.58)is almost flawless, and corrects many of the compatibility issues with other programs. Back to the drawing (programming?) board.

Posted by David (Email: on) on April 18, 2001 at 19:11:38 Back to Top
I must preface this post with a compliment: Starbuck is without a doubt the absolute best text, html, and palm document reader on the PocketPc. But, it does have some room for improvement.

1. Cleartype - This would be one of the main missing features on the PPC but is it even an option on the PalmPC?
2. PocketPc - Just a few tiny issues on tidiness in the PocketPC (menubars a few pixels off, SIP button getting in the way, etc.)
3. Dictionary feature - Of course you can read and search a dictionary with starbuck, but how about the one useful feature from MSReader making its way over, namely the ability to look up words straight from the text with a few taps?
4. Screen buttons - When the screen buttons are turned on, even though disabled in terms of their action, they get in the way of selecting text.

And finally - GREAT PRODUCT - the best I have on my device.
